Call of Duty, as has long been predicted/expected, is set to introduce a monthly subscription fee for its multiplayer users.

Launching as an online service, rather than a standalone product, Call of Duty Elite will be part of Modern Warfare 3 (and future titles) when its released in November, and will include the option of charging multiplayer gamers for access to stuff not available to regular consumers who only pay once for the game disc.
What's important to note is that this is not a pay wall. You're not being forced to pay a monthly subscription fee to access the game's multiplayer. Nor will Call of Duty Elite itself cost anything. Instead, the idea is that extra content will be offered to subscribers, for an undisclosed fee.

Some of that will come in the way of tools allowing players to analyse their behaviour and records. Another will be the fact subscribers will be given access to map packs.

There will be a free version of COD:Elite as well.

But starting this fall, series publisher Activision will offer a service you can pay for each month: the premium grade version of something called Call of Duty: Elite (don't panic... there's a free version coming too).

No idea what parts will be free and what will be fee service only.

Mostly it looks like they are trying to reinvent Facebook/Twitter/Myspace/Forums and repackage it in a gamer only package.

The real question is how map packs work with this service.

Elite will be available in two tiers of service, one for paying and one for non-paying Call of Duty multiplayer fanatics. While all of the perks of membership are yet to be announced, that paying group may never have to pay for a Call of Duty map pack separately again.

So if you pay for this service then you get Map Packs free. Maybe.

mostly, they have caught up to what Halo has been doing since Halo 3.

but they are gonna charge for it. I am also wondering about that map pack thing, unless its a constant stream of DLC maps for the paying customer, I dont know if it will be worth it.
