do you really trust such a new system to hold 40gb of your data backed up somewhere you dont know where it is? Cloud computing is going beyond its limits in my eyes to many people trust big corps with huge amounts of data... what if that system goes down? i bet they dont have a 99% uptime 365 days a year.
if i remember right too there was a huge corporation not long back lost more than 10,00TB of users data and only 1 person got there data back and to top it all off there was no way of recovering it :p. personally i LOLed hard at this. its a "backup". not "the only copy of this photo". im not a fan either, and i dont want to have to jack in somewhere to use my stuff.
I'm gonna ask you questions, and every time you don't give me answers, I'm gonna cut something off. And I promise you... they will be things you will miss! |

Oh yeah, I mean I would never keep my work files on an offsite storage like that without a local copy too. The thing here is that box.net is accessible from anywhere and with my iphone or ipad too. Anytime I'm on vacation or away from home, I can get to my stuff while my main desktop pc is sitting at home.

ah that's fair enough least some ppl have sense to only backup old data rather than new and current work. that 10,000TB of data was for a local council (up-to-date documents, and all new work) = epic fail :p
Ive always been sceptical of how how cloud computing was going since I left my IT tech job. back then it was just coming in and now its still pretty much doing a Bluray thing where its all the Dogs B*ll*ks but its just doesn't take off as well as they thought it was going to. i dont even think Japan has mastered it yet and that's got to be saying something. I am digging the new iTunes as well Chief.
As for the whole "cloud computing where is my stuff at" thing....I'm fine with it. It's just storage space for music and pictures for me. It's the same if you use any of those sites where you back up your data over the wire. You never know how secure your data is until someone breaks into it. Just ask Sony. In the end, if you're not comfortable with having files stored someplace other than your house, then you shouldn't use that feature. Buy yourself a couple of external hard drives to keep copies of (not move your data to) your data from your computer, and then once a month or so, make an image of your computer incase something stupid happens. Having worked in the data recovery and computer forensics field, I'd never tell someone to do something that they were not comfortable with. For myself, I'm fine with pictures and music being stored in the cloud. “Weapons down or I will not be responsible for what comes next.” - Captain America |
