Custom Controller Paint Job
My first one. It's sloppy in places but overall I think it looks pretty cool.
The paint I used was Krylon camouflage Ultra-Flat spray pain. The colors are Khaki, Olive, and Brown. The white is the original color of the controller. I just decided to use it for more color. I now think it would have looked better if I had not used the white. Oh well. (I do have more paint....) Oh and it took me maybe about 90 minutes to do it using painters tape a razerblade and the glass as a cutting surface for shaping the tape into the patterns I wanted. I did one color, let it dry then another color etc. etc.. The first 4 pics are how they where when I Painted them. I painted the shell with both sides assembled for continuity and the select/start/left-right triggers/d-pad buttons as well as the rear-plate (<--that is what I am calling it) separately. For the last 3 pics I put all the panted pieces together and taped them so they would stay in. You can see the green 'A' button partly pushed in because of that. The paint dries in 15 minutes. But I need to let them sit for 7 days to be "chip resistant" or fully dried for reassembly. Note: The controller did not work when I put batteries in it before this project. That was why I took it apart in the first place. So I may have to put different guts in the painted shell. So-howzit-look? Last edited by [SS]Midnight : 04-30-2011 at 12:08 AM. |

Sea Snipers have been messin' with controllers for years!
This was one of my first mods. moved the reload button. Later on I would move both R3 and L3 buttons. |

I think I will paint my older white console tomorrow. White is just so boring. Heh. I will see if I can work my favorite logo on it....but I will have to work with the colors I have now. Camo Mt. Dew. heh. Should be good. Last edited by [SS]Midnight : 04-30-2011 at 02:19 AM. |

Nice Midnight looks good. I did a few back in the day, some with the rattle can and a couple with auto paint. Best thing to keep the paint from chipping is the rattle can clear coat by Krylon, it made the controller a little slick but it kept the paint looking sharp.
Also avoid painting the analog sticks, the paint will chip on them from use. If you want to change the sticks and d-pad from a dull gray there are places on the interwebs that sell these parts for a more custom look. Last edited by [SS]Hobo : 04-30-2011 at 06:00 AM. |

Looks awesome! I think the white in there makes it.

The only thing I would recommend on your next project is either clear the final or do a flat white as your base so the whole thing is either flat or shiny

Thanks guys. Ya Wally I am thinking of following up with Hobo's idea with a shinny clear coat for the final effect and to further protect the finish.
Did my Xbox today. It was a plain white Pro 20GB version (same color as the picture frame). Now it's cool. It is like 80% done. I need to touche up some spots (you should notice) and add some digi camo spots on the Mt. Dew side. Gonna make some of the face plate camo wrap around to that side. I made a some what critical mistake on the Mt. Dew side...let's see who notices it first... ...man looking at that makes me thirsty...gonna have to go crack open a Dew! The controller looks excellent - However, I'd go towards more of a dull clear coat rather than a shiny one.

I think that would go better with my flat coloring so far. If they have it I will get it.
