PS3 Drops its price!

From here:

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 3 with 160GB hard drive will drop in price to $249 for North America and €249 for Europe/PAL territories, while the 320GB model will now retail for $299 and €299.
Since its release in 2006, Sony has sold over 50 million units as of March 29, 2011. The PS3 also enjoys strong support from software developers and publishers, with a worldwide cumulative number of titles exceeding 2,495 titles and downloadable PS3 games available on PlayStation Store exceeds 3,100 titles. Of these titles, more than 120 are stereoscopic 3D supported and 200 titles are PlayStation Move dedicated or supported.
Upcoming big releases include Madden NFL 12, Battlefield, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Resistance 3, The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the hacking of their PSN?

Possibly. I imagine it has more to do with positioning as the fall/winter approaches. Sony probably hopes to snag some sales as dedicated games release (Uncharted) over the holiday season. They are probably looking for a way to counter the Kinect-driven 360 sales they anticipate over the next few months.

Most likely it's a part of their "goodwill tour" to include a price drop from the hacking debacle they (and PS owners) had to suffer through. But also, it's a 5 year old console. I fully expect that Microsoft and Nintendo will also lower their prices at some point.

Hello Blue-Ray player :)

Tagger 08-19-2011 03:44 PM

I don't think I'd buy a PS3 if that was the primary reason for the purchase.

Blu-Ray players are cheaper than the PS3 now. I got mine for $200 - complete with Netflix and Wi-Fi capability.

That is the sole use of my PS3. Blu-Ray/Netflix and with the Wi-Fi. I got those free games they offered and have not played them. I tried to play the old PAIN game I bought for like $10 as a full downloadable game, but it required I download and install the new patches. Well needless to say that after a couple hours waiting for that to get done I lost interest.

I swear every time I try to like the PS3 it spits in my face. :hit-23:

I went to preorder Battlefield 3 Limited Edition today, gamestop has Ps3s for sale new for $249 and used for $269 lol

LOL now THAT is funny. FAIL!

S10Draven 08-20-2011 01:41 AM

gamestop has always been like that.

eh still about $150 too much for using it as a gaming console.... heh but that is just my opinion. $250 is not a bad price though considering the original price of $600.
