Playstation 2 HDD Details
Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan has revealed through Nihon Keizai Shinbun newspaper new details regarding the Playstation 2 hard drive pricing and release schedule. The 40Gb drive will be released in Japan on July 19th in two different versions. The internal version of the drive will retail for approximately 18,000 yen or 146 USD, while the external model will retail at 19,000 yen or $153 USD. According to various news sources approximately 15 games are already in development which will support the hard drive for saved games, texture storage and other advanced features.

Back and forth, back and forth -- SCE remains cautious, but hard drives will be available for FFXI testers.
February 19, 2002 - Today, SCEI announced that new production runs of both versions of the PlayStation 2 HDD hard drive/network adapter unit (internal and external) are complete, in anticipation of a new round of testers entering the beta version of Final Fantasy XI. Square's upcoming online RPG requires the HDD peripheral, and users were evidently feeling the pinch recently, with slots in the beta test open but no hard drives on the market to equip the users who would fill them. However, the new HDDs will become available in Japan on February 22, in time for testers to pick them up.
SCEI has been very cautious regarding production of the HDD as yet, issuing small production runs mainly to fill confirmed pre-orders. Demand is expected to pick up as FFXI approaches, however, since it is the first major release to require the peripheral.
Also this will irritate some of us. I went to this website called Toys n Joys http://www.toysnjoys.com/access_ps2_1.html they have info saying the HDD is ONLY for Japanese release. They have the internal and external version available.......... for 140.00+ for each type.................. but It works only on the Japanese Playstation 2 models SCPH-30000 and SCPH-35000.
Lots of contradictory info out there, but for now it doesnt look like even have to worry about it, Damn Japs are gettin us back for Hiroshima and Nagasaki........... Joke em if they cant take a bomb! or two. j/k
