SINGLE MOM SUES LANDLORD
Tucson, AZ -
Nancy Hampley, 29, is suing the Golden Cresting apartment complex in Tucson, AZ as well as the complex's landlord. Ms. Hampley claims that the landlord had infringed upon her civil rights when she evicted her only because she is a single mother. "I woke up this past Friday morning to a knock at my door, and when I answered it my landlord was standing there with a police escort telling me that I had 2 hours to pack my stuff up and get out", recalls Ms. Hampley, "I ask why I was being evicted and she told me it was because she didn't want strippers and prostitutes living in her complex. I was so confused at first because I'm neither of those."
The next morning, accompanied by her lawyer, Nancy Hampley showed up to her ex-landlord's office, Kimberly Combstock, and requested written notification why she had been evicted because she was going to file a lawsuit. Her lawyer gave the following statement:
"She just looked at my client and began laughing, the she told her that since she was a single mom that she had to be either a prostitute or a stripper, and stated that she refused to rent to her kind of trash."
Since the eviction, the landlord has even placed a sign at the entrance of the complex that reads "VACANCY FOR ALL NON-SINGLE MOTHERS". When asked to comment on the sign she told local reporters, "We all know that if you're a single mother that you aren't a very moral person, and it's a fact that 9 out of 10 single mothers either turn tricks for a living or give lap dances at strip clubs. I don't want those sluts living in my complex because I don't want them bringing their clients or drugs into my apartments. Single mothers just give me a bad feeling."
Nancy Hampley is seeking $600,000 for the turmoil that the eviction has caused her.
The owners of The Golden Cresting apartment complex have yet to comment, but the sign at the entrance has been removed.
