SOCOM 3: Official
Zipper Interactive is at it again. First details inside.
by Jeremy Dunham
February 23, 2005 - In a press conference that is happening while I type this, Sony Computer Entertainment of America is unveiling SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy Seals. Once again developed by Zipper Interactive and slated for American store shelves this fall, SOCOM 3 will now support the use of vehicles and boast levels that are six times larger than before. Locations this time around include Morocco, Poland, and Bangladesh, and players will be able to swim should they need to (makes sense for a game based on the Navy eh?). Additionally, the AI is dramatically improved (enemies take cover, shoot around corners, and use actual flanking techniques), and the oft-requested checkpoints will be thoroughly available.

No other details are currently known, but our own Ed Lewis is at the press conference right now and will be back later in the day with more information. See you then.

More info:
"The game, unsurprisingly called SOCOM III: U.S. Navy SEALs, will take place in new theaters of operation, contain improved artificial intelligence, and an all-new weapon attachment system that will let players customize their weapon loadouts even more than they could in the past.

SOCOM III will take place in Morocco, Poland, and Bangladesh. All-new streaming technology will be employed here, which is said to increase the size of the game's single-player maps by five or six times over what was seen in the previous SOCOM game. To help compensate for that size, single-player missions will have checkpoints, allowing you to save your game mid-mission. The missions will also have multiple paths to success.

The ability to swim is one of SOCOM III's new ability improvements. You'll also be able to operate vehicles, including humvees, light strike vehicles, technicals, T72 tanks, an SSCR assault boat, and a customized speed boat. Communicating with your AI-controlled team will be altered a bit--the game will now give you a context sensitive button that will command your team to move to a specific location, breach a door, and so on. This will be in addition to SOCOM II's already-robust AI control system. Speaking of the AI, it will see some improvements as well. Players' team AI should be better at assisting you, and the enemy AI will be better equipped to coordinate with one-another to form smarter attacks against your SEAL team. Weapon customization sounds like it could be a big part of SOCOM III. You'll have 31 weapons to choose from and 21 different attachments, making for over a thousand possibilities. "

Dear lord, selectable weapon loadouts?! Bout time, where've they been? under a rock? Man thats an old rock.

Just give us a final screen with everyones kills and deaths on it and hit% and shit like that. Just give us the abillity to rent a server (or have them go back to servers period) so i can boot people from a room if i make the room. And PLEASE , PLEASE make the hit detection more accurate. It doesnt take 2 clips of bullets from ANY gun to kill someone. Oh, and add punching and kicking and knives and stranglualtion, WHY THE HELL NOT! If i can sneak up on someone to do it, i should be allowed to.

The vehicles, eh, i could do without them. We have Battlefield for that. Why do i think they will be lame? Also, why not have the option to SELECT WHAT TEAM YOU WANT TO COME IN ON IF YOU GET BOOTED!!! Cmon, common sense.

More than 16 players allowed in a clan too.

A website that will give you a live listing of whos online and where so you dont have to login to see whos playing.

Thanks for the intel Grifter!

yeah, should be fun. Im just afraid they will take it too far. One point ive been arguing for a while is the seals ability to pick entrance points. Whether it be a vast area or perhaps these vehicles, maybe a new sense of unknown will add to the strategy.

I just remember that some of the best times in socom were when you had to recon, and you didnt know the grass by the bladecount. Ahh well, more fun to come I'm sure.

Thanks for the info again, and I must say I am quite happy the whiteboard is up again, and quite tempted to join.

Dude, you have got to join...that Whiteboard ROCKS! I find myself creating countless ideas on how to breach to how to escort the VIPS....I mean you can create it and send the link to your clan members to view what you have come up with. It saves hours of online time trying to yell at everyone to do something or be somewhere....

Yea, it looks like Desert Glory in a way....here is my next question, how will the HDD be involved or will it?

Great stuff, please keep it coming.....

yea the building to the left looks exactly like the one passage in desert glory…

with the hd: i personally dont think so. in europe they do not even sell the hd for ps2, because the numbers were bad. since the ps3 will have a hd integrated it seems to make no sense to get one for the ps2 on the market.

i read that they will use a special streaming method (compared to gta-san andreas) for getting a better gameflow and bigger maps in socom3. but thats rumors…
